英語はあまりわからない(得意ではない)が読んでみたいというふうには思う。
それで読んだ。本屋にたまたまあった本である。Shelagh Delaney(1938-2011)というイギリスの劇作家の作品である。ウィキペディアを見るとShelagh Delaneyは”デビュー作の"A Taste of Honey"という作品が有名のようだ。今回読んだのは、"The White Bus"という作品である。
ある人物がバス("See your city Bus)に乗ったり、市長に会ったり、メイスの持ち主に会ったりする。それで、ある町を案内してもらう。で、その舞台は書いてないのだが、ウィキペディアによると、Shelagh Delaneyの生まれた街のSalfordあたりだという。市長やメイスの持ち主、バスのアナウンスでこの街ではスラムがあったり、図書館や学校、劇場があったり、建物の取り壊しがあったりする、ということを主人公はわかる。ここで市長がこのバスで見て回ればいろいろあるのだということを言ったシーンを引用する。
Lord Mayor: (...)These special white buses have been bought to take residents and foreign visitors on conducted tours of the city-we want you all to see that this place is not solely a collection of miserable slum dwellings-which do exist but which are rapidly being demolished. New homes are rising in their places-homes which anyone can be proud of- (p.126,127)
それから、バスのアナウンスも引用する。
Voice: We welcome you aboard this SEE YOUR CITY BUS and hope that your journey will be a comfortable and happy one. Coffee and biscuits will be served at the halfway stage in our journey. If you wish to smoke, please sit on the top deck.(p.128)
kersel flatsというところがSalfordにあるようで、画像で見ると団地のようなところだったが、気になった。もう少し調べたいと思った。
映像も動画であったので、見た。団地のようなところ(たぶんkersel flats)をくるくるバスで回っていた。また、建物の取り壊しの映像も見た。見慣れないので興味が湧いた。
