「火をおこす」はカナダのユーコンという地域の極寒の様子(気温は-75°F (−59 °C))が書かれている。男(The man)は男の子たち(The boys)にキャンプで会うために犬と一緒に向かうが、途中、とても寒く、火をおこそうとしても手が麻痺してしまうなどの出来事が起こる。主人公の男には、ソルファー川の老人(The old-timer on Sulphur Creek)が様々な忠告をしていたのだが、男はその忠告を軽んじており、やはり忠告は正しかったんだ、というふうにおもうシーンが何度か出てくる。
いろいろと寒さゆえの険しさがつたわってきた。また、本能的に寒さの危険を感じている犬と、自らの判断(ときにソルファー川の老人からの忠告を軽んじる)でやってきた人間(男)というのがひとつテーマだと思った。
いくつか寒さゆえのシーンがあったので紹介する。(引用のうしろはkankeijowboneの大体の訳)
'As he turned to go on, he spat speculatively. There was a sharp, explosive crackle that startled him. He spat again. And again, in the air, before it could fall to the snow, the spittle crackled. He knew that at fifty below spittle crackled on the snow, but this spittle had crackled in the air. Undoubtedly it was colder than fifty below — how much colder he did not know.' (p.14)
「男はマイナス50°Fで唾を吐いたら雪に落ちるとパチパチ音をたてるのを知っていたが、唾を吐いたら雪に落ちる前にパチパチ音をたてた。何°Fかはわからなかったが、マイナス50°F以下ではあった。」
物語のうしろのほうでは手が麻痺してしまって、歯をつかってものを拾うという場面が何度かある。ミトンの手袋を歯で拾ったり。以下のところでも歯を使っている。
'...After some manipulation he managed to get the bunch between the heels of his mittened hands. In this fashion he carried it to his mouth. The ice crackled and snapped when by a violent effort he opened his mouth. He drew the lower jaw in, curled the upper lip out of the way, and scraped the bunch with his upper teeth in order to separate a match. He succeeded getting one which he dropped on his lap. He was no better off. He could not pick it up. Then he devised a way. He picked it up in his teeth and scratched it on his leg. Twenty times he scratched before he succeeded in lighting it. As it flamed he held it with his teeth to the birch bark.' (p.23)
「...試行錯誤のあと、氷がパチパチ音をたてている中、男は手袋の付け根のうえにマッチの束を乗せ、口に運び、下あごを引き、上唇を開け上の歯でマッチをわろうとし、ひとつわれたが膝のうえに落ちてしまった。手が痺れていたので工夫した。——歯で拾い、脚の上で20回ほどこすると火がついた。それを樺の樹皮にもっていった。」
歯でマッチをくわえ、膝の上でこするという姿勢は大変だと思った。
